A responsive website: why the phone wins or loses customers

More than 70% of searches happen on a phone. See why a responsive site is not optional, how to test yours, and what changes in conversions.

A responsive website on a smartphone

The phone is where customers find you

In Albania, as across the region, most Google searches, Instagram clicks, and site visits happen on a phone — not on a computer.

Your customer searches “restaurant near me”, “web agency Tirana”, or “online store” from a phone, while walking, in a car, or on a break. If your site does not work there, they simply tap the next result.

Google knows this — and it rewards sites that offer an excellent mobile experience with better rankings.

What “responsive” actually means

Responsive does not only mean “the site appears on a phone”. It means:

  • Text is readable without zoom — at least 16px for body text.
  • Buttons are large and easy to tap (minimum 44×44 px).
  • Navigation is easy — a hamburger or a simple menu.
  • Images load quickly and do not overflow the screen.
  • Forms work — fields are not tiny.
  • The phone number is tappable (a tel: link).
  • There is no horizontal scroll — everything fits the screen width.

How to test your site in two minutes

Try these tests now — no technical knowledge needed:

  • Open your site on your phone. Can you read it without zoom? Can you find contact details within five seconds?
  • Google PageSpeed Insights — paste the URL and look at the Mobile score.
  • Try the contact form from the phone — does the email arrive?
  • Tap the phone number — does the call start?
  • Ask three people to browse the site on a phone — watch where they get stuck.

The direct effect on SEO and Google

Since mobile-first indexing, Google judges your site mainly by the mobile version — not desktop.

A slow phone experience means a lower ranking. Elements that spill off the screen mean a poor experience, and Google penalizes that.

Core Web Vitals (speed, visual stability, responsiveness) are measured mainly on mobile. Agencies that build with Next.js and clean code have a clear advantage here.

The most common mistakes on non-responsive sites

We see these problems constantly on Albanian business sites:

  • Text that is far too small — designed only for a 27-inch screen.
  • A desktop menu with dropdowns that fail on touch.
  • Pop-ups that cover the screen and are hard to close.
  • Heavy video or sliders that slow the load.
  • PDFs or wide tables that need horizontal scrolling.
  • A chat widget that covers the contact button.

Mobile-first: how we build sites

At Sakt Studio every project starts from the phone — not the other way around. We design for the smallest screen, then expand for tablet and desktop.

That approach makes the most important elements — the message, the call to action, the contact details — clear where customers see you most often.

Modern technology (Next.js, optimized images, responsive CSS) makes this the standard, not an optional premium.

Conclusion: the phone is your main shop window

If your site does not work on a phone, you are losing most of your potential visitors — and Google is noticing.

A redesign or a new build with a mobile-first approach is one of the fastest-return investments for any business in Albania. Contact us to review your current site, or to build one that works on every screen.
